Touraco, thanks so much for this review. I finally had a chance to jump on the Lightroom 5 train and I must say that I love it. I switched over from Aperture earlier this year and it’s been a breath of fresh air. In addition to being faster and having cleaner UI which oefgertainly is what I prefer over the one in Aperture, it is also snappy, even on my older system (iMac 2011 with the now dated Intel core i5). It feels so light and snappy and I get a feeling that Adobe Software is finally focused on what I, an end user, want them to be. The major gripe I have is that each time I open a project in Lightroom I have to look for the Aperture plug-in so I can bulk export so I can create a batch module for later mass editing. This has already become annoying.

I’ve been running LR5.1 for a few weeks, and it’s been great. My speed is nearly identical to Aperture 4.3, and the interface is mostly new.
Here are some details, as I THINK I want to keep using Aperture until Lightroom 5’s bugfixes are released.

I’m not sure yet what’s changed, but LR5 seems to have taken more memory than previous versions did. (This is a known issue.) That’s fine, but it is noticeable as projects grow beyond 150 photos.
I haven’t noticed it with Aperture, FWIW.

The commands in the Library module have changed. What used to be Import –> Export is now Export –> Import. (And import menus no longer have an ellipsis to indicate a step/substep. I’m on [apple|windows], so I can’t tell Windows from OS X, but I don’t see the trick with the ellipsis on the Mac.)
