Single-player mode begins with Crazy Dave joining his plants in the battle against the zombies. The player finishes the first level before the zombies reach the inside of the house. The player can choose to continue from the first level or resume from the last level. The player can also return to the game’s main menu by pressing the ESC or Back button. This mode continues until the player completes either all 39 levels or encounters Crazy Dave wearing the crazy cap. The character will disappear from the game’s story and must be unlocked in the second mode by navigating through each level and pressing the “reset” button twice to get Crazy Dave to appear.
To play the game, the player must build and plant a militaristic garden that spits hot sauce at the invading zombies. Plants can be acquired by leveling up and can be used to defend the garden from zombies. The player is able to grow plants up to level 15 but will run out of energy once the plants reach maximum level. The player can throw plants at zombies, creating green fireworks, or smash them with a hammer. The player can throw all kinds of weapons at zombies, but such weapons purposely fail to damage the zombie. Spicy Hot Potato allows Crazy Dave to dig in the garden and prevent the zombies from gobbling up plant patches.
Each garden is divided into several sections. As the player fills up the sections, more food will be produced. Food production will increase with every additional level. The player must make sure that they provide their plant with food or else they will die. The player will also gain bonuses for collecting stars or hearts. Star collection occurs from either taking a zombie down or by destroying a soda can control. Hearts are rewarded for completing levels or destroying certain items throughout each level, such as the zombie’s head or the soda cans. Hearts will also be acquired if the player collects pieces of candy. Candy will destroy zombies.
