“There are those who say family films do not work in India. In particular, they make a point of going after the youth and erring adults. However, what they forget is that there is a huge market for a film that appeals to old as well as young,” says Balu Mahendra, CEO and co-founder, Big Tree Entertainment.

Rajkumar Dugg, VP, Prod, Big Tree Entertainment, says, “When the film releases, the Hindi film fraternity is bound to be on the scene. It comes with its own set of challenges, but if the film starts off well, there should be no reason why it cannot become successful on its own merit. KGF 2 will certainly be the next big contender in the category of family entertainers.”

Balu Mahendra feels that KGF 2 will only have to do what the makers of Bigg Boss and Love Marriage did for them—pragmatically mould itself to the palate of the Indian viewer. KGF 2, says the Big Tree Entertainment CEO, is a scale-up in execution. “It is a big-budget film with more elaborate sets. It has a bigger cast, an extended dance sequence and a huge song list. The film is also longer than the original. But nothing has been given away. It is, after all, still a family entertainer.”

Owing to the lack of family entertainers in India, KGF 2 is on a roll to introduce a new kind of crowd-pleaser that directly addresses the youth viewers to whom youth films have been alien till now. “If watched neatly packaged and executed, KGF 2 will not only perform well commercially but also make a statement about the changing mood of the youth in India,” says Dugg.

The Bollywood film has been in the news for its large-scale piracy in north India. Even after being banned by the BSA, nearly one in every four movies that are being downloaded illegally in the north are KGF 2. In the Hindi belt, the scene is similar with KGF. Well, the film has a huge potential and I’m sure after the release of the Tamil film Beast, it will rule the north.
