Typhoid fever is a serious infection and without antimicrobial treatment, the outcome of the disease is fatal. *S. typhi* remains viable in the environment for months ([@B12]). Therefore, the epidemiological surveillance of the *Salmonella* serotype in drinking water sources could be of great importance to the authorities to take the necessary measures to prevent human health contamination by *S. typhi* ([@B19]).

In addition to the serotyping method, the detection of antibiotic resistance patterns of *S. typhi* by disc diffusion method may be of great significance in the epidemiological studies. The low level of resistance to the tested antibiotics may be due to the indiscriminate use of antimicrobial in food animals and humans. These results may also be related to the consumption of contaminated food sources in the studied areas. Additionally, it has been reported that *S. typhi* is the only bacterial species that acquired antibiotic resistance from humans to the commercially available antimicrobial agents ([@B15]).

The findings of this study indicate that the serotype and the antibiotic resistance pattern in isolates may vary in different geographic areas. Therefore, it is suggested that due to the increasing antibiotic resistance in *S. typhi* isolates from the studied areas, further studies are needed to determine the prevalence and pattern of the bacterium and antibiotic resistance in this region.
