How to stop login page from creating new session

I’m using Java and Spring MVC. I want to stop the login page from creating a new session after a user successfully logs in.
The login page is a JSP page that redirects to a servlet.
If I create a session variable in the servlet, does it get stored in the client browser and get stored in the server? Or does the server store the session variable when it logs in the user, so that the client doesn’t store the session variable?

Session variables are stored on the server, not the client. You can stop creating a new session on a client side basis if you want by setting a cookie with the appropriate value when the user is successfully logged in, but the cookie won’t be sent to the server.
