In 1897, William Taylor came up with the idea of using rubber impregnated paper instead of ivory or metal keys. He founded the Taylor Typewriter Company, which in 1923 produced the Q-writer with over 40,000 units. In 1935, IBM purchased the Taylor Typewriter Company, and changed the company’s name to IBM Typewriter Division. Between the years 1934 and 1941, they sold the Model A, which was the first IBM typewriter to be designed to work with IBM’s new business machines such as their electrical adding machines and tabulating machines. After World War II, IBM changed the machine, but it was no longer called the IBM Model A. The first Model A produced after the war, was the Model 225.
