1. Vision. Your vision is essential for your success in life and leadership. You want to look ahead, envision where you will be, and dream about how your life will be. But you must also be a presentist. Be presentist. Set goals and dreams right now for your personal development and your leadership practice.
Theres no shortage of research and think pieces about how to be more effective in all kinds of settings, including the Academy. But too often, people get stuck in the weeds. They read ideas like the “The Opportunity Matters Less than You Think” talk or the “Whos Still on My Email List?” post and think, “Ah-hah, thats how I should be doing this.” The research you need to answer questions like these are out there. All you need is to apply it. Now, thats not to say that good ideas arent out there. Its a matter of putting the right ideas to work, and the right ideas require practice. Don’t just read what Ive written; put your practice hats on and test it out. Start with one thing, work on it, learn, find out if it works for you, and then try another. If you find something that works, keep doing it until you get comfortable, and repeat. If you dont get it, learn what you did wrong and try again. If you still dont get it, ask someone for help. Learn from that experience. And that brings me back to the guidelines Ive developed for myself. Each week, I do something about one of the guidelines Ive decided to commit to in the coming year, and I invite you to join me as I try it out. I wont lie to you. I know that I wont get it right first time around. I know its a process. But to be honest, thats the point of the exercise: to learn and relearn, to get it right, and to help others do the same. So, lets get started. The next ten ideas come out of my own experience and research on the important ingredients to success in the Academy. We ll learn together. And if you find that theres anything in here thats too obvious or too right, too easy, or not to your liking, please drop me a line. This is just a starting point for helping us all work together to make the Academy a better place.
