Top Guns: Maverick is directed by Tony Scott and stars Tom Cruise and Owen Wilson in the story of an F-18 pilot instructor played by Wilson, who is forced to take on the legendary test pilot played by Cruise during a Navy training exercise. Cruise plays the hotshot pilot and Wilson is the reckless jock who graduated from flying the trainee program just when Cruise signed on to replace Val Kilmer in the role of Top Gun instructor Red Dog.
From the first take, its really important that a character is in the cockpit to represent the character. Thats because when we do a close up, there is a sense of intimacy to that. Now, on an IMAX, you get that intimacy multiplied quite a bit because you get the IMAXs expanded aspect ratio. So, you see almost a quarter more of that cockpit, and that little bubble of intimacy is amplified. The other thing is, when we shoot a series of points of view, which is common in a lot of movie theaters, which was something we used a lot to show the pilots working, its important for that sequence to really feel as close to reality as possible. In fact, its as close as it gets to what it was like to really be flying that airplane.
