a team task is a task that requires application of the unique knowledge, skills, and practices of members of two or more disciplines. team tasks are distinguished from the activities of working groups that are composed of members of a single discipline.

it is interesting to note that teamwork is not one of the top strengths of the high-performing teams identified by their leaders; however, some of the team members who filled out the questionnaire commented that they thought the team was “very good at teamwork.”
and finally, it is important to be able to tell when the team is not operating at the top of its capabilities, as having to overcome a long list of excuses to try and get an in-person meeting scheduled every few months can be a drain on the team and their effort, both mentally and physically, thus reducing the effectiveness of the team.
collaborative team arrangements are well-established in the literature and are becoming increasingly common. a recent review of collaborative practices in healthcare found that most of the teams in which professionals worked together were relatively homogeneous and involved only one or two professions [ 18 ]. examples include collaborative teams consisting of nurses, physicians, other health professionals and/or administrators (from the same or different organisations) [ 19 ], multidisciplinary teams of professionals, including pharmacists, physiotherapists and dieticians, from various disciplines in an acute healthcare setting [ 20 ], and collaborative teams in mental health services [ 21 ].

in the discussion below, we will examine each of these themes in more detail and reflect upon how they can be used to enhance the experience of those working within interdisciplinary teams. the methodological approach was thematic analysis in order to identify the core themes that emerged from the data and was inductive in nature. themes from the synthesis of literature were considered to be central to the study aims and are illustrated in the framework of the six-stage process of thematic analysis [ 38 ].
the study was designed to enable a detailed understanding of the experience of working in an interdisciplinary team and the factors that make an interdisciplinary team work effectively. in the following sections we will provide an overview of the literature on interdisciplinary teams, then a summary of the findings of the focus groups, and finally a discussion of the implications for interdisciplinary team working.
