PPNE01 New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2 – The Next Levels
the game features a new world map and four new worlds, each with its own theme. this includes a world that is made entirely of lava, a world that consists of an ice cave (featuring a green version of bowser), a world that is a desert, and a world that is entirely covered in metal. the four worlds have ten levels apiece, as does the world map. unlike the original super mario bros., it is possible to revisit levels from earlier worlds. this also adds a new chapter to the game.
both mario and luigi travel to the dark world and find that the kingdom is infested with koopa troopas. after mario and luigi defeat koopa troopas, they return to toad’s castle, where mario and luigi receive their new items, the star coins, and the super star, which allows mario and luigi to continue their adventure.
worlds 9 through 14 are based on super mario 64, and feature a single goal pole. this is also the only time in this game that a castle boss will act as a pitfall trap. mario can jump, wall jump, slide, and spin to move around each world. unlike the original game, a trowbridge can be used to traverse the world.
there are a total of 50 worlds, each starting with a variety of “hidden” levels. these levels are identical to the main levels, but are only accessible after completing a set of levels. each of these hidden levels contains a secret exit, which will allow the player to proceed to the next world. when this is done, the player may access the world with the new goal pole. some of the hidden levels contain keys that are required to progress through the world. the only way to move the flagpole to the next world is to unlock it by clearing a hidden level, and the key is usually obtained by clearing a special level in that world.
New Super Mario Bros Wii 2 – The Next Levels play almost identically to the original New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but with some minor changes and a few new additions. The player’s character can run, jump, and grab onto boxes which are floating in the air, swing on his own hammers, and tackle his friend’s hammers, creating platforms for himself to run on. If the player catches a pipe and swings himself to the left or right, he will quickly change the direction he is facing, and vice versa for the other direction. At the beginning of the game, before Mario and Luigi have been able to save the Mushroom Kingdom, the screen will switch to displaying a picture of the Mushroom Kingdom, and showing the names of all the characters and their roles, with their icons in the bottom-left corner.
Like in the original game, Luigi is able to run faster than Mario, but his jumping is a few times slower than Mario’s jumping, and he cannot jump as high as Mario does. New Super Mario Bros Wii 2 – The Next Levels also features some new characters, such as Peach’s Toads, who are able to jump much higher and perform wall jumps. New Super Mario Bros Wii 2 – The Next Levels has a new “snowman mode,” which makes snowballs drop from the sky in various colours. Once a snowball has been launched, it will proceed to its predetermined trajectory before it reaches the ground. This feature makes it easier to chain together multiple consecutive throws of the snowball, letting the player attack foes with numerous combinations. One of the most significant new features is the ability to jump over certain obstacles by using the aiming mechanism. The aiming mechanism plays a more prominent role in New Super Mario Bros Wii 2 – The Next Levels than in the original, and in some levels, being unable to hit certain obstacles can prove detrimental to the progress of the player.
