this map will show you how to use the qgis map expression functions to quickly create and modify map elements. it will also show you how to combine layers using the join visible layers function. while this isnt the best example to show you the expression features of qgis, it does present a good example of how you can combine layers for the purposes of a map. the principle behind this exercise is to allow you to quickly create and modify your layers in a way that doesnt require you to work in your map editor. but, how would you get a map into your creative software like illustrator?
so how can you easily create a vector map in illustrator? this example will show you how to export a qgis map into an.ai file. it will take the actual qgis map output and then export it to adobe illustrator. youll need to open qgis and make a new page (file | new) and then export the map by ticking the include vector feature information checkbox and then selecting which output format you want to create the map in (e.g. pdf).
thankfully, qgis has some facilities for doing this. to start, create a new print layout from the print layout toolbar. then, select add a new print layout from the print layout menu. a new page will be added to the map, in the top left corner. then, navigate to add files to new layout, and locate the vector source file that you created in the previous exercise.
qgis is an excellent application for designing maps and with the advent of map themes, it gives us a lot of freedom. even the more advanced users will be able to find their way around the tool and get the expected results with very little effort. if youre already an experienced gis user, youll find the tool quite easy to use.
My first tutorial was about HTML exporting styles from QGIS . This one is about how to create a thematic map. This tutorial uses Openlayers . Its a web mapping library used by many popular websites to display a map.
Maps are still fairly complex in terms of geometry management and color schemes. But while they are complex, they do provide a lot of control over the final appearance, and make it very easy to match specific colors to specific vector features in a way that is consistent regardless of scale. QGIS 3.4 allows the application of the same color scheme (by wrapping a rasterized tint) to all features in a layer at once (instead of having to create a color scheme and re-apply it to each single feature). In addition, the same expressions and functions that were in the older versions are still available in QGIS 3.4, so users arent left with a lot of what they wont otherwise do what they need to. Im very excited to see the progress of QGIS 3.4 and its modules and tools over the next few months. QGIS is the leading open source GIS program out there and, if youre unfamiliar with it, I highly recommend getting to know it a bit more. Its quite powerful and not nearly as complicated as it was a few years ago. I wont dive too far into the merits of QGIS in this post, but its quickly become my default despite having access to ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro.
