once we had run the tests on three or four systems, the number of infections we had picked out became apparent. nearly all the reviews, as far as i’ve seen, have put it down to a relatively small number of infections. the scanner itself picks out a lot more than it appears to.
most of the infections didn’t even have full support for the ntfs/fat filesystem, so the scanner appeared to pick up some stray binary files and ntfs zero-length file names, and some short folders (created by short names being zero-length folders), which were then treated as unallocated space and wasted over 10gb. also the naming conventions for jfs in particular are not always obvious, and have some overlap with fat and raw filesystems. not all infections would play nice either, refusing to cooperate by not presenting a volume label (for whichever partition they thought it was mounted on) or non-active partitions.
many of the infections are made to specifically counteract the creation of a few specific registry keys. this may be going after the ones that authors have written about in various websites, but at the same time they are deleting the rest of the keys which may have given them information they want. another feature is the automatic deletion of files (usually a jpg but also other images) which are marked as being part of a specific program or group of programs, these files may be deleted to reduce the size of the drive further. in all of these cases the values are deleted, so any data may be lost.
we should note, however, that for all its success, xp is certainly not without its shortcomings, many of which are an inevitable by-product of its age. the biggest of these is perhaps its lack of support. for the moment, we are stuck with the version that came out in 2001. the windows 2000 service pack 1 (sp1) is the most recent patch for xp but is not officially supported on the platform, and the windows 7 service pack 1 (sp1) is only now getting around to being released. it is, however, available for download, although it is not without its own problems (more on this later).
now we need to make a bit of a digression and talk about the windows brand itself. in its current form, it is an umbrella brand of products under the control of microsoft. although the company continues to operate under the same name as it always has, it is now in the process of being split into several different companies. although not strictly a windows brand, windows 7 is one of these, and covers all of the windows desktop operating systems (xp, vista and 7) as well as mobile platforms (phone, tablet, surface and rt). it is expected to be the flagship windows operating system for the foreseeable future, but can certainly still be thought of as a windows brand in its own right, and will have much in common with xp and vista.
as you can see from this list, even the most advanced windows operating system isn’t without its own peculiarities. although windows xp is by far the most-used operating system in the world, its success is in large part a product of its (smaller) userbase. windows 7 does have some catching up to do, but the question is whether it is going to be able to do it in a reasonable time frame. in the meantime, there are a few alternatives if you want to switch to something else, or if you just fancy a change. there are plenty of differences, so please read on for a fuller breakdown of the different platforms. in short, you might want to consider one of the following:
