one of the hippies in this group was a 24 year old named steven lechter, who knew we had a membership in the idyllwild club. so he managed to find out about the free beaches at hippie hollow. we had a beach and a beautiful canyon. steven took some photos of our naked kids and he sent them to the genasail beach association in san francisco. these photos were actually published in their newsletter.
so steven started the free beaches of marin county. and i joined him in the mid 1970s. we did get away with it for a couple of years. we had a little tent and an easel to paint on. but the longer that lasted, the more the whole organization made sense. the fact that we werent doing anything criminal, we werent doing anything illegal, and we werent trying to make money off this – that made us feel good. and if we werent doing anything illegal, then the police wouldnt shut us down. eventually, those in san francisco lost their nerve and took their protection money elsewhere.
the credit for my present scholarship on these matters must be accorded to the many colleagues in social psychology and cultural anthropology who have patiently probed the records of my childhood. through the searching of the journals and diaries of this time, they have confirmed the conclusions i drew long ago.

the brutality of the 1920s was rooted in two interrelated developments. the first was the continuing momentum of industrialization and migration from the west to the south, the west, and elsewhere. the first automobile was invented in the last years of the nineteenth century, and soon cars were becoming a common sight in remote mountain places like the canonsburg area where i grew up. robert moses and the state highway department were beginning to build expressways through the cumberland, the monongahela, and other rivers in central pennsylvania.
the second event that precipitated the 1920s was the great wave of immigration that began in the 1910s and continued throughout the 1920s. generally, these waves of immigration increased the number of people in the cities and the number of households made up of a mother and a father. the number of single-mother families increased by more than 500 per cent between 1910 and 1920.
