If you’re still reading this far down, I assume you’re interested in a more in-depth look at Rebirth than the introduction. Well, then you’ve come to the right place. Check out the second part of this series here if you’ve been following along.
Like many other titles, Rebirth has a piece of music. I will gladly admit that I am no musician and have no idea how to play the guitar (like most people in the real world) so I’m unable to give it any kind of fair credit.
As you might have guessed, Rebirth has a harder difficulty curve than its predecessor. It takes a little while to get used to the firehouse-like play style of the game and the ruthless way its world reacts to you, but once you have a grip on things, the game has plenty to offer. There are more customization options, new bosses, a new world design, and tons of weapons and other goodies that should help last a good long time before the heat dies down. What started out as an experiment turned into a fully fledged game, so you’ll have plenty of meat to chew on once you get around to hacking it.
Rebirth comes with all of the previously mentioned items, some of which have even been updated to work better now. There are two new challenges, the Steam achievement system, and a weapon editor. If you’re interested in those, see here for more.
Like the number one fan favorite item, infinite hearts, the infinite heart stat is now also hacked! Instead of slowly leaking money to support a crush on a superhero, the extra money will go back into Isaac’s health or any other stat. In some levels, you can find a way to blast all of the add-on blocks into the walls, causing enemies to burst into a cloud of floating rocks which destroys the blocks immediately. This can be used to reload a save file after an explosion, or to drain an infinite heart if that is what you need to get past a particularly tricky situation.
Just as with the infinite heart stat, sometimes in life you will want more bombs than health. Unfortunately, it takes far less health to spawn an infinite number of bombs than it does to spawn an infinite number of hearts. With one extra point in you’r almighty money, you can now use bombs to push multiple items at once, making pushing items around considerably easier. Another possibility is to instantly gain infinite bombs in times of duress, which is handy when you’re exploring a level and find a way to open up a block that causes enemies to explode.
The mod is built to play as an introduction of a new player, so no extreme custom levels or complicated “get out of jail” maneuvers are included. However, in case you are stuck in a situation you cannot leave, you can push yourself out by shooting yourself out with a gun. The result of this is not as fun as one would expect, since Isaac is technically disintegrating in a lake of blood. The way to get around this is to turn off the script that would normally do that. In earlier versions of the game, at the bottom-right of the game screen is a small menu where you can select a new game configuration.
