every time i look at a little bit of music, theres always an idea in there, an idea thats waiting to be turned into something. for example, a guitar solo might start as a two-chord progression, but there always seems to be more to it than that. i was always looking for other ideas, always.

league: the musicianship you hear in snarky puppy can be traced back to my days in early punk rock bands. this is a band that is built on the idea of a core of great musicianship and the strength of the songs. i like to think of the strength of our songs as coming from the back end of the band. we use the strengths of our individual musicians to create a great sound that is full of energy. every musician has their strengths and weaknesses, and weve found a way to have the best out of everyone. our music is made up of each persons strengths and weaknesses. hes got these amazing talents, but its the things hes not great at that make snarky puppy great.

this was also the first time i was able to work with a drummer, like, literally my first time in the studio with a drummer. ive never worked with a drummer before. ive always worked with keyboards and guitars. and with this record, to get the drums, it was kind of like a test for me. ive never worked with a drummer who actually played the drums, so i was like, well if i can get this guy to play the drums right, i think i know how to make this work. so, we kind of developed this relationship. and then, theres a song called “beach life,” and theres this song that starts out with just a guitar and a bass, a simple song. and theres a guitar part that i was like, oh, i know how to do that. if i just take that part out, and i can put a bass and a drum beat behind it and use a snares on the drums, you can really fill in a lot of space and create a really rich sound. and then, youre like, oh, i wonder what else i can do? so, thats kind of the ethos. theres an idea of just kind of exploring and playing with all the different sounds and textures that you can create with that little bit of room and space that youre given, and then seeing what else you can do with it.

the label is a lot of fun to work with, and theyve been really supportive of our vision. theyve been really enthusiastic about where were going. theyve been very patient with us as we build a website. theyve been very patient with us as we build a youtube channel. weve been really excited about our outreach to artists and how weve been able to connect with producers. i think weve connected with producers that weve been able to connect with in a really powerful way.
if you listen closely, you can hear that my piano is a digital piano, my guitar is a guitar and my trumpet is a trumpet. all the instruments are recorded with the midi controller in the same room as the instrument. its really important to me that there arent any digital tricks, its all recorded the same way you would record live. ive been doing this in the past using keyboard loops and things like that. but, theres a little bit more depth to whats going on in the sound in the snarky lineup. i wanted to do something that sounded more like a guitar and a trumpet than a keyboard or a trumpet.
but, i wanted to make it more of an album that could be a journey for someone to listen to. ive been using technology to make musical ideas and things feel more like a production that i can control. ive been making this thing, so if youre not familiar with this music that ive been making, youll know that its very different from what i normally do. its like if you took guys like mike oldfield or jon hopkins, who are both incredibly talented and make interesting records, but i dont like the way they sound. so, i wanted to make something different.
