in addition to these two scenes, there are many other moments where bollywood songs are used to great effect. for example, in the climax of the film, lisa calls out for nina to play a song from dostana (2013). but it is not only the score from the film that plays in the scene. there are also the background songs played by many different female bollywood singers. and these voice overs are instrumental in bringing nina and lisas relationship to the fore.

so even though the film might not always hit on all the right notes (although it does have moments where it does) it succeeds in making me feel a connection to its two central characters. the difference between the film and some major studio hollywood films is that while the latter have a lot of action and excitement, this film is mainly driven by nina and lisas relationship, and the journey they make in their relationship.

writer, director pratibha parmer (salaam bombay and prince poo) is its standout. with a playful eye, she has captured those wacky characters in a movie that is vibrant, witty, and eccentric, yet with a loveable sweetness, that will win over fans.

the lead, shelley conn, who is in british television and theater productions such as a caine mutiny-style courtroom drama in broadchurch and the royal shakespeare company, is fun and wry. when she and her older sister, pam (shelley conn), who wants to be a nurse, discover their brother, ghanshyam (john shrapnel), in bed with the neighbor, dianna (stephanie cookson), they make a pact with each other to keep his secret.

other cast include: ronni jhutti as bobbi, gaurav singh as ghanshyam, linzi hateley as jackie, ruby jones as anika, shirley henderson as tarra-lill, stewart cruickshank as jacko, and victor mcguire as billy.
together with her friends, pearls, pedders, nina has a charge, dot, a secret lover. she cant relate to dating, but lives by a more spiritual code. before marrying, they meet in puran baba (james fleet) and they are each shown to be in love with peeders, who is married to a conservative father. tina is now unhappily married to phil (chris mason), though he seems to love her because she is who she is. now, to her great surprise, they have a daughter, beanie (marissa day). what can happen when two people put everything aside?
plot and significance: this is one of those films that begins as a fairly standard story, but then develops a twist that makes it interesting and challenging. the leads are likable, the characters likeable, and the script
immoral issues: this is about what a woman can and cannot do when her husband is having an affair. its about sexuality. its about gender. and about love. in one of his last conversations with janie, tina and phil say they are just friends. this was just for the convenience of everyone.
violence: there is very little fighting, but there is plenty of bickering, and the audience gets a glimpse of the emotional toll this is taking. particularly in certain scenes, the ending is a bit too sudden.
shana khandwala directs nina, a young lesbian newly outed. she has grown up with siblings and parents and her familys sense of traditional values and community are seemingly immune to change, and her familys immense love for each other is palpable. nina wants to support her parents, and to make them proud; her parents have made their mark on a community. their neighborhood is a community, a place where they work, eat, raise their children and play. its where they belong, its familiar. so when she calls home in tears to tell her parents shes out, theyre strangely calm. but when theres no marriage for nina, her parents sit her down at the kitchen table, and its here her troubles start. a throng of male characters come calling, all the while allowing the camera to linger over traditional indian temple architecture. one half expects the music of an early-1970s ian dury song to start playing over the images, but khandwala keeps the atmosphere light and charming. will nina end up marrying her father in a white wedding with a white goat? or, in ninas words, what am i, a lesbian?
