my first exposure to indian cinema was in the late 1980s, when i was first exposed to south indian cinema. the films i loved from that time were primarily set in the tradition of the “kollywood” (tamil-language cinema). i caught up with some of the classics of this cinema through netflix, but it was this new generation of filmmakers that i really wanted to see. so when i saw the trailer for vicky donor on the netflix website i was excited.

if it’s a movie about a sports team, then there’s bound to be drama. and if there’s drama, there are romances and even a few scandalous moments. all that happens in chittrashi rawats movie chak de india, which proves that when it comes to bollywood, women are the true powerhouses. in the process, india’s national hockey team takes center stage, as it has in the past, to recognize the women’s game and to honor the hard work and dedication they’ve put into the game.

india’s women’s hockey team has been one of the nation’s most powerful and important assets in sports. the team’s story has been told before, most notably in a film called chak de india, but this 2016 release is both a remake of the same film and an opportunity for the current team to shine on the big screen. director zoya akhtar is a veteran of bollywood, with some of the most acclaimed films of her career. her 2013 film, gajja bhogle, was a powerful and witty tale about a high school hockey team in india, but this is a chance to see the sport from a new perspective and to see all sides of its story.

the film is based on kabir khan’s book of the same name, and its events actually happened, though the film is told through the lens of a fictional journalist who chronicles the history of the team. the story is set in the ’80s, as the team is preparing for the 1992 olympics in barcelona, and it’s a story about one of the nation’s most inspiring and powerful sports teams, the national hockey team, which in the ’80s was just emerging as an important part of the country’s history. the film touches on political corruption, class divisions, inter-caste tensions, rivalry between urban and rural players, and the women’s empowerment struggle. so it’s a lot of things, and a lot of them go into making a good sports movie. but the film is a good one, and an important one, and it’s one that needs to be seen. it’s one you’ll cheer for from start to finish.

with their busy work schedule, movie star siblings team aham (arshad warsi and zayed khan) fall further behind in the eight-year-old adya’s (ananya panday) eyes and she pesters them until they accept her as their daughter, and in turn, as they become closer, so does their relationship with their autistic brother akash (himanshu kohli).
many parts of the film have humor, especially when the characters aren’t feeling very well. kohli conveys akash’s awkward affection through subtle, funny, and brilliantly acted bits such as how he dances like a robot – a homely boy tries to impress a girl (ghatge), but ends up looking like a robot instead.
chak de india’s musical numbers are more memorable, most notably when ghatge-kohli woo each other, and sheena/kohli performs in an adorable duet. also notably is how rajveer’s (ali zafar) lyrics, in both hindi and urdu, mirror the plots, turning the constant miscommunications into comical situations.
the only problem with the film, and what might’ve ruined it for some, is its massive climax, which seems more like shock than a real emotional payoff. cheating wives, siblings torn apart – these are all beat-for-beat variations of lolita, but like lolita, they’re incomplete. what was missing was an emotional, meaningful conclusion to the women’s stories and characters.
if some of the acting is a bit wooden, you’re not likely to notice. that goes double for the soundtrack, which is mostly incredible. khan and director kabir khan’s energetic enthusiasm for this story and their home turf is contagious, and their ability to polish a script so its characters have individual yet integral arcs transcends the genre and makes the movie feel fresh and relevant.
