Sony announces that the PlayStation Network online gaming service is undergoing a major upgrade, with both existing users and those signing up for the first time having to upgrade their accounts. The online service, which is still undergoing a major overhaul, will go live when the new update is released and will run on both Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable consoles, as well as the PlayStation, Play Psp, Bravia, and Pocket TVs.

While the online service is undergoing an overhaul, the PlayStation Store is getting major updates. The updates are usually received by putting the console into developer mode and then downloading the files. In this case, Sony will be updating the update image directly, making this a firmware update rather than a system update. This means there is no need to reboot the console and can be performed while it is connected to a TV.

This is a limited update which is going to be installed on the firmware for the PlayStation 3. This firmware can be put into developer mode and the installation process will be displayed on screen. The update will have no effect on your PlayStation 3 unless it is already in the “developer mode” on the console.
