This happens throughout – from shots too straight to collisions with the stumps too rare to occur in a match to the way the bowlers can spend five balls of a powerplay simply unable to hit the ball outside off. You can hear the cheerleaders’ commentary on one exchange that talks you through the shot for an entire fortnight, and it just adds to the whole turgid monotony. EA Sports has taken us in a very different direction with Brian Lara’s International Cricket, a product that does focus on the “game” aspects of the sport, but one where the game is actually part of an incredibly well-designed and -marketed product that the casual cricket fan will understand.

And that’s what EA has really lost. Brian Lara’s International Cricket is a very polished and genuine recreation of a sport that has captured the heart of millions of people. Its sheer quality of execution is staggering, and it captures the spirit of the sport so much that we can’t wait to dig in and start playing it, no matter what happens next.

EA Sports Cricket ’05 isn’t really bad. Its gameplay is just plain wrong. The computer bowling is hilariously bad, and the bowler animations are just not fun to watch. However, there are plenty of other problems. The batting mechanics don’t really work, the field placements seem like it was mostly made by a muggle who had some cricket experience, and the commentators are pretty much impossible to understand.

All the gameplay elements of EA Sports Cricket 2005 have been almost entirely updated and improved over the 2003 version, and there are some great new features. But the batting mechanics are so poor that it completely ruins the game, so its not really improved gameplay. Those who enjoyed Cricket 95 and its predecessor, Cricket 97, will love Cricket 2005. Those who enjoyed Cricket 2004 and all its high scores will think otherwise. From a technical standpoint, Cricket 2005 is so amazing, and the gameplay is so big an improvement, that it’s almost a shame it does suffer from such a massive flaw.

Brian Lara Cricket 2007 was even more frustrating to play. You get one of two ball-tracker models in this game, and the camera is always either too far away or too close. The ball-tracker on the Xbox 360 version is extremely user-unfriendly. For example, you have to go into the configuration menu in order to change the factor at which the ball-tracker automatically zooms in on the ball. There’s also a glitch with the missile mode. When you’re using the missile mode, it wants you to go up in the air and aim for the ball before it comes back down. That’s a lot harder than it sounds, and hard to explain to people over the internet. But with the missile mode, if you miss the ball, you can’t see where it’s going. The game ends and you get the news that it’s “Missed the ball!” Bummer .
Let’s start with the obvious: the start screen. Even in an era when catering for the casual gamer is going out of fashion, there’s something about Cricket 2005’s – OK, EA Sports’ – design that just screams “casual gamer”. The type is just slightly smaller than it should be, the text is fine but not too fine, and the menu artwork is actually funnily reminiscent of the opening menu screens in many early multi-tap shoot-’em-ups. The menu options also lack the subtlety that EA Sports seems to have been aiming for, and with each new menu option you have to search around the face of the screen to find where the various selections are made.
As you progress through the season the games become increasingly more complicated in their presentation. The graphics are likely to offend many a purist, and come across as a mix of the wacky 90s and the era of claymation sports, especially the Boca-plus-Shakespeare lines, but it’s actually more intelligent than it appears. With the game locked in widescreen this means that the exact positioning of every player is apparent to the player in real-time, rather than being dependent on the height of the TVs stored settings option and other such things. Field boundaries are perfectly clear, and the game’s clear. Not that you’ll get any help getting a ball into the right field.
