9/11 World Trade Center Attack The Disaster Recovery Site
In modern times, there are no instances of terrorist attacks as detrimental as those of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York, which claimed the lives of approximately three thousand Americans and injured over six thousand others. The events of that day and its catastrophic aftermath caused the creation of the Department of Homeland Security and the a number of other reforms and initiatives to prevent and respond to similar catastrophes in the future.
9/11 was the third terrorist attack on U.S. soil, and the first to involve aviation. The United States was specifically targeted because of its large presence in the Middle East and Central Asia, its population density, and because it is the birthplace of al-Qaeda, the organization that planned and executed the attacks. There were no warning signs of the attacks, and while there were some indicators that an attack was to take place, they were not connected to either of the two al-Qaeda plots that had been uncovered prior to this attack.
The attacks followed some warning indicators. On August 17, 2001, Mohammed Atta and two other al-Qaeda members drove to the abandoned World Trade Center site and stole three compact discs and a palmtop computer, as well as a passport and some loose dollar bills belonging to another member. The five were then joined by Nawaf al-Hamzi and Khalid al-Mihdhar, both al-Qaeda members with known links to the 9/11 attacks. They drove to Portland, Maine, where Hamzi was dropped off with his wife, al-Mihdhar, and Najibullah Zazi. Hamzi and Zazi then drove to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Zazi then departed for California for what was later determined to be a flight training course.
Hamzi and al-Mihdhar left for Portland, Maine, in a rental car rented by Hazmi, and from there drove to the abandoned World Trade Center site. They later claimed they were scouting for a site suitable for a millennium event that would promote al-Qaeda’s ideology. Two days before 9/11, al-Mihdhar told an al-Qaeda member that he was going to be in New York City on 9/11.
