In a paper published today in Physical Review Letters, a team of researchers at MIT describes how they simulated the formation and evolution of an average hurricane near the equator, and what the simulations reveal about how the hurricane works.
The key to understanding the hurricane is understanding its winds. These winds are zonal in nature, flowing from west to east across the storm. In hurricanes on the North American coast or in the Caribbean, the wind speeds can become extreme, and can cause major damage when they touch down. But in the tropics, hurricanes are weaker, and their winds tend to be more gentle.
But in tropical storms on an African continent, the winds can become strong and cause chaos.
“African storms can go to high winds, like a hurricane can,” said Shidehu Zhu, lead author of the paper and a postdoctoral researcher in the MIT Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences (EAPS). “What I’m interested in is, how do these tropical winds work under natural conditions? How are tropical storms in the tropics different from hurricanes in the North Atlantic?”
Hurricanes in the North Atlantic are caused by warm ocean water circling the vortex at the center of the storm. The center rises, and the warm water comes in, and the cold water goes out. But tropical storms are not centered around a vortex. They are instead marked by a wide “zonal” ring of thunderstorms. And that has implications, as Zhu explains:
“If there’s not a center, what are the driving forces?” said Zhu. “The circulation doesn’t need a center to work, it’s more like a big convection cell. But the dynamics are different.”
The researchers used a combination of computer models and high-resolution data gathered by NASA’s Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) spacecraft to simulate the storm. They were able to put together a view of the circulation of the tropical storm that explains the extreme winds. Their findings could help weather forecasters predict when and where the storms’ winds will peak.
“We’re trying to get a better picture of what’s really happening,” Zhu said. “If we can understand how tropical storms work, we can understand what the potential for strong winds are in a storm.”
