Komrow based his program on two rivals: Apple’s own QuadraDraw for the Apple II, and IBM’s MicroDraw.

Komrow developed AutoCAD for the Apple II because he believed that the Mac, then being developed by Apple, could not produce a sufficiently powerful graphics display and because he felt that QuadraDraw was too expensive to license. The program was developed in Komrow’s apartment and did not have the features that would eventually be standard in other CAD programs. Komrow focused on developing the program’s basic functions first, then adding more and more features as he needed them.

AutoCAD took longer to develop than Komrow anticipated. Early versions took four to six weeks to develop.

Komrow first approached Apple Computer, Inc. in March 1975 to license AutoCAD for the Apple II. He also approached companies in Japan and France, but Apple was the only company that accepted his offer. Apple agreed to pay him $25,000 and a royalty on each machine that AutoCAD would run on. Komrow and Apple signed the contract on August 31, 1975.
