John Carroll University has been awarded a $10 million grant from the National Science Foundation to establish the Center for PDA Research, which it plans to open later this year.

As part of its plan to develop the center, which will house 10 to 15 faculty members, John Carroll will also renovate some of its existing classrooms and increase the size of its existing computer labs, said John Carroll Provost Joseph Frueh.

The center will provide faculty, staff and students with a range of research and classroom support services, including use of the university’s high-tech facilities, on-site research space, small grants and grant writing assistance.

The center also will develop a new field of research and scholarship that focuses on pervasive computing — essentially the study of how computers and other electronic devices affect people’s daily lives.

“The center can be described as the new, enhanced and broadened research and instruction foundation for computer information science,” Frueh said.

The grant, announced Thursday, is the largest in John Carroll’s history. Last year, the university received a $7 million award for its new O’Shaughnessy College of Liberal Arts, which offers degrees in computing, information science and information technology management.

The massive NSF grant, which will fund the center for five years, will allow John Carroll to hire some 10 to 15 faculty members in the next three years. The university is hiring for a new career services center and computer science professor in the sciences.

The university also plans to recruit 20 research associates, who will provide support services to the center’s faculty and student researchers.

“It will provide a major boost to university research,” Frueh said. “We will be able to make a world-class research center here on campus. It’s absolutely mind-blowing.”
