The posts in this series are essays on the design, architecture, security, and resilience of our Mobile Operating Systems.
With the advent of smartphones and tablets, the original notion of “Information” has changed dramatically. We now use the network connection of a Personal Computer, to fetch both the Internet, and the data it contains.
This new configuration has given rise to an ecosystem of technologies and protocols that no more separate these two entities, but rather bring them closer together.
Additionally, what once was a client and server communication, has somehow turned into a peer-to-peer or e-reputation messaging system. How should we deal with it then, both from a user experience perspective and in regards to the delicate balance between privacy and the freedom to use personal data, on the one hand, and the principles of security, on the other? How many times has a user felt it wrong to watch a full movie in a public place? How many times has a user been upset after receiving a private and confidential e-mail from a friend, only to find out she had been forwarding the message to the world?
The applications themselves can be either paranoid, or even malicious. For example, some mobile games use your location data to decide the gameplay itself, such as driving you over the roads of a city that you were previously in. What does that mean? Not only that they stalk you, they also “infer” from your roaming habits that you may be a Communist or an Anarchist. Or, the reverse: does the same principle applies to your private contact list, where the application starts to send out e-mails to people you have not told you were your e-mail contacts, but rather data that it, itself, has “inferred” from your last activity?
