I find the best way to get going with the training is to spend a few minutes each morning writing in your journal. This is a great way to capture your ‘why’ and to keep you motivated and focused on the goals you’d like to achieve.

Today I’d like to share some quick tips on journaling that will help you be more successful with your training as well as keep you motivated throughout your journey.

1) Start with yourself. This is by far the most important thing you can do. What does you want out of your TBI recovery? This is where you will ultimately have to start your journal. When you come to journaling, here is what your ‘why’ should look like: “I want to be able to look the children in the face. I want to be able to look my wife in the face. I want to be able to get up and be active in the world. I want to be able to tell my children I love them. I want to be able to feed my wife and my children. I want to be able to make them smile and to see the happiness come back into their eyes. I want to feel like a whole man.”

2) Give yourself a deadline. Journaling is one of the best tools you can use to give yourself accountability. Set a timeline for when you would like to have this goal met. It might be six months, a year or even ten years. Write this down as an absolute deadline and stick it to your fridge or to your bathroom mirror. Say to yourself ‘I will start journaling when I have reached this goal.’

3) Use regular blocks of time. Journaling takes time. You need to create a daily schedule. Many TBI survivors find it best to journal during the first 15 minutes of their morning shower. It’s a very quiet time of the day that leaves a lot of time for reflection. You can also journal on your iPhone while waiting at the doctor’s office or in the car on the way to work.

4) Use pictures. This is one of my favorite methods of journaling. You’ll need to pull out some old photos. Write words on the back of each and then place them into a scrapbook. You can also use your iPhone with the built
