Mask of the Plague Doctor is an interactive fiction story that works around you. It’s a text adventure where you control the people, places, and actions of the game in a meaningful way. Will you continue on the quest, or will you flee Thornback Hollow? Will you help the citizens, or harm them? In your quest to cure the Waking Death, will you be like the prince and save the village, or like the town’s worst enemy?
Each decision you make creates a new plot line and dialogue choices that you can revisit later. There are more than a dozen endings, and around 60,000 dialogue options. Every decision changes how the story will unfold.
The choices you make shape the people around you, and decisions shape your reputation with the town. It’s up to you to decide whether to live out a life of service or a life of crime.
Mask of the Plague Doctor is non-linear and open-ended. You can progress at your own pace, or go back and pursue a new plot line at any time.
To control the actions of the game, you must use menus, an inventory, and dialogue trees. These are presented to you in an at-a-glance format, and you may skip over them or take a closer look at them at any time. You can also modify the game rules to suit your needs.
About The Game:
Mask of the Plague Doctor is entirely text-based. Characters will give you witty quips and helpful advice, but there are no graphics or sounds to distract you. The game is entirely driven by your choices, so try all of them! The slow pace of the game might have you reaching the end before you notice, but that’s the point. Make it a different story every time you play.
You can make choices at any time, even after the plot has been resolved. The choices in this game affect how the story will unfold in the future, and you can choose to revisit them at any point.
The choices you make affect the people around you. Depending on your alignment, decisions either help or harm the citizens of Thornback Hollow. As you make choices, you find yourself at odds with others, but the decisions you make alter your reputation with the townspeople. You may begin as an enemy, but work for the common good and you’ll be a hero.

Plot
Asimov opens by noting that he is “one of those lucky people who have found a reason to live, and a reason to die, on countless worlds, a million years or more in advance of their conception.” His current planet Earth needs his help, he says. He was asked by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to draw a graph that shows how civilization has developed since the beginning of recorded history.
