In the summer of 1996, I had the pleasure of attending an academic retreat, “Writing and Publishing: A Literary Life,” held at The MacDowell Center for the Arts in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Among the other presenters were Richard Thomas, who went on to write the novel The Lives of Others, and Glenn Stout, whose work appeared in The New Yorker. Stout looked like an earnest young man who was trying to get a basic understanding of what he was undertaking, and he came across as more careerist than creative. Thomas appeared to be an intellectual adventurer who was excited by the idea of finding his way and the people who might help him. I remember that he used the word “cultural tourism” and that he felt that part of the need to study and practice writing came from the idea that art would enhance life, either by provoking insight or clarifying feelings.

Reading the book again twenty-five years later, I was struck by the coincidence of my early and my later experience in the profession, and I thought I would share some thoughts about my own career and what I learned from it.

What I learned from my career

In my first year of postgraduate work, I had been advised to go to Iowa for a residency, and I did, joining the graduate program at Iowa State University. I was living at a nearby farm near a lake that had been home to a utopian community in the 1940s, and the people at the farm were also residents of the village. Life was simple and slow. I learned about nature and weather and balance and teamwork in a place that required none of those things. I had some difficult and threatening scenes with work-study students, who were, for the most part, pleasant people but in some respects didn’t respect me. In my second year, a child was born on the campus. He was then four years old, a child of my wife’s aunt, and he was visited by the vice president of the university and me.
