The fugly, painful, beat-’em-up Bionic Commando: Rogue Roar will star wacky-looking super-soldier Cody as he takes on either dinosaurs or ninja in time-warped 1970’s America. I haven’t seen the gaming footage to see if Cody’s new array of weaponry comes into play beyond the already-rather-awkwardly-animated controls, but the gameplay looks entertaining enough. The real question here is why is 2017 Square Enix dumping a game like this in the old-skool 3D revival department?

So, we’re treated to more cutscenes like the above, 2D Star Wars scenes like the above and a whole lot more of this. These are not valuable enough to sustain the length of a game, and this list is getting long.

But while the primary gameplay was very much a letdown this time round, the Bionic Commandos2 soundtrack impressed on repeat listens. Instrumental nerd-culture classic Jaki Graham – aka Frank Herbert, subject of the excellent “It was better before” blog – is a five-piece group from New Jersey called The Fog of War. All 5 tracks here were originally released by Rosemary Music/Tristar as ‘The Informers 2’ in 1988. Re-released on Arche, and subsequently reissued by Delmark as “It Was Better Before”, the distinctive sound of The Fog of War can be heard in a variety of tracks over the next 30 years including both This Way Out (for the original soundtrack to the hit movie Hackers) and Ghost in the Machine (for a number of TV episodes, and some wonderful cyberpunk games like Ultima Underworld II and Deus Ex).

The bands signature sound is characterised by the piano and synthesizers giving way to spacey drum machines and heavy grind guitars much closer to the sound of electronic music. The audio tracks are all very chunky, and unlike most video game music which tends to recycle the same music over and over, these tracks feel as if they’d make an excellent escape from the static-laden super-environments we tend to get these days. [COMPLETE VARIETY OF LOCATIONS] – The Haunting Nightmares map features different locations that are obtained through the game. The locations are inspired by horror movies and classic horror stories.
[SCARING QUALITY] – Haunting Nightmares is not an average ghost simulation. It features ghosts that act unnaturally, induce fear in the player and activate their worst fears. There are two types of ghosts. The first type of ghosts are simple. They only move quickly, and appear in packs of at least 10. The other types of ghosts are more complex, and not only move in the area that you are in, but also jump in your face and scare you.
[HORROR-RELATED SECRETS] – Depending on the location that you are in, you will encounter various objects. After solving a few riddles, the objects will reveal secret things.
[BRING YOUR OWN WORST FEARS] – Haunting Nightmares features a haunted house that is packed with various surprises. Each room represents a location that can be visited within the game. You can unlock access to new rooms by solving a puzzle within the room. The rooms are inspired by horror movies and classic horror stories. You can check the rooms by visiting them in the map. The rooms are divided into three categories.
