The latest developments on the NB Liquor and soft drink tax issue
As of midnight Thursday, March 21, some 600 home delivery drivers in the Halifax region were being paid nothing for work they’d performed and never will be paid, even though they’re being paid for the days they did work.
On March 20, the federal government announced that, if Nova Scotia wants to keep its promise to Atlantic Canada by not imposing new provincial liquor and soft drink taxes, the province will have to do it by June 1.
By Friday night of that week, the NB Liquor and soft drink tax office had seen an average 2,500 delivery notices a day and was completely out of room.
However, the provincial government is fighting for its tax in court, one week ahead of the deadline, putting thousands of Nova Scotians on notice to be ready to get a tax refund in June. It seems that higher courts in other provinces haven’t yet ruled on the legality of the tax.
