  I have a feeling I’m going to be hearing a lot of complaints from people that Tarnished is one of the weakest installments of the series, but that’s been the case with every game in the series. The battles are fun when everything is going smoothly, but when the enemy brings out new tactics and you lack the stamina, skills, and equipment, the battles start getting long and tedious. However, one problem that even the “weakest” installment of the series has had is the speed at which the gameplay races toward boss battles, and it’s something Tarnished really excels at.

  I don’t really see how you can say that Tarnished is one of the weakest installments of the series when the legendary title Dawn of Heroes is way up there as well. To add on top of that, you had people complaining about the supposed lack of quality in the artwork for the game, but I think that my eyes are perfectly capable of putting a face and expression on a character that makes me want to punch them in the face; so no, it’s not that. Dawn of Heroes had lots of people complaining about it and it came out when graphical advancements were still in their infancy, yet it still looks like a game from today. Now, I’m not saying that Tarnished is devoid of improvement here or there, it’s just that the foundations of what made the series great have been stripped away here. A lot of the things that I loved about the game, like the wide-open world with a lot of different situations and dungeons to go through, have been pulled away, replaced with a linear experience where you constantly progress in a series of linear levels. This is especially evident in the larger-scale dungeons, where every room has been reduced to a mere foot-high “obstacle” where it’s up to you to fight off the pressure of it all and move past it.

  There’s a lot of things I love about the game, but from a design standpoint, I don’t really have much to say. The story is great, the characters are interesting and fun to watch develop, but the world that we get to see is just too small, too simple. The game is full of pseudo-intellectual conversations that just amount to a bunch of bickering between the good and the evil forces of the world, and I hate it when that happens, because it gets repetitive.
