Important:
YubiKey Configuration COM API uses persistent storage for user and application data. This means that after restarting your application, data on the YubiKey will be lost. To use this component effectively, you should store data on the YubiKey while it is running.
Overview of the YubiKey Configuration COM API:
This component’s interface is similar to the YubiKey SDK and is fairly straight forward. For the most part, this component mimics the YubiKey SDK’s functionality.
A YubiKey can only be configured in a one of three ways.
Read and write keys.
Write keys to specific slots.
Perform a one-time write to the YubiKey.
Read and write keys to specific slots with optional key authentication.
Read keys from a specific slot.
Read keys from a specific slot, optionally key authenticated.

YubiKey Configuration COM API allows you to access and manipulate the information needed to configure your YubiKey.
With YubiKey Configuration COM API, you can retrieve and modify the following parameters that determine your YubiKey’s behavior:

Installation
Installation is easy – you’ll just have to download and integrate the SDK (we recommend that you install the SDK from the “Downloads” tab of this page). After that you can import the project into Visual Studio, open it, and then build the project.

By default, the SDK will link to the Microsoft Dynamic-Link Library for COM and ActiveX Control (MDAC2.DLL) that will install on the user’s computer.
Configuration API and Key functions
YubiKey Configuration COM API has two API’s, Configuration API and Key functions that you can use to do a lot of interesting things.
The Configuration API provides you the YubiKey Management Service to your application, and it will interact with the YubiKey device.
The Key API allows you to use the YubiKey functions for personalization. For instance, the Key API allows you to use the YubiKey device as a standard USB keyboard for your operating system.
Note: The Key API cannot be used directly from within a YubiKey card when the card is powered off or unlocked

The unlock code is a string of binary values where the zero value represents a NO operation and a one value represents an operation. For example, a string of 100 is interpreted as “no” and 0100 is interpreted as “yes.”

The YubiKey Configuration COM API is designed to be a standalone component that is easy to integrate into an application, but it does require the use of some other software component as well.
In some cases, the application will benefit from a low level interface for a Secure Element, for this reason it makes sense to use its functions directly.
In other cases, the application can benefit from a higher level interface, for instance, it could require the use of YubiKey Manager for setting up the application.
