Here, we report on a new method to prepare samples for the X-ray fluorescence spectrometry of aerosol particles, which is rapid, does not require any type of sample pretreatment, and can be applied in ambient conditions. The method is based on the fast reaction of tantalum powder and silver nitrate solution, immediately followed by the addition of HCl solution to make the silver completely soluble in the solution, thus allowing further interferences of the chemical elements only present as solid particles to be removed. This is achieved by filtering the reactive mixture through a polycarbonate membrane, which can be considered chemically inert and easily sterilized, thus allowing ambient sampling. To validate the method, the levels of cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), and lead (Pb) in five aerosol samples, collected at different sites and at different times in the atmosphere over one month, were measured by the new method and compared to values obtained by conventional analysis methods.
