What’s New In Jmxterm?

jmxterm is a console based JMX client supporting most of the JMX standards. It is extensible and automatically refreshes itself using JMX RPC. For each JMX-enabled remote object, jmxterm supports the following:

Declarative MBean registration: you can declare the MBean class and name on the command line. For example, if you have a bean named myobject with a setXXX method, you can run the following command:
$ jmxterm -jar ~/JMXClient.jar -J-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=5555 myobject

Command-line MBean access: you can use the -c option to specify a MBean on the command line. jmxterm checks if the MBean exists and automatically registers it in the agent at startup. For example, you can access the myobject MBean in the default MBeanServer of jvm by running:
$ jmxterm -c com.sun.management.myobject myobject

Security check: since JMX is a client/server protocol, you have to perform a security check on remote MBeans. When the agent detects a non secured MBean, it prompts you to provide the password for access. Once you are done, you can run the operation normally.

Remote access: using the -r option, you can access remote MBeans which reside on remote MBeanServers. For example, if you have a remote MBeanServer named remoteserver, you can run the following command
$ jmxterm -jar ~/JMXClient.jar -J-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=5555 -r remoteserver myobject

Command Line management utilities: In addition to MBeans, you can specify a JMX object using the -J option and the -o option. For example, you can run the following command
$ jmxterm -J-Dcom.sun.management.jmxremote.port=5555 -o org.apache.log4j.grouper org.apache.log4j.Level level

On successful execution, jmxterm writes the values of the specified parameters to the standard error output of the executing application.
